Tim's Story:
It was cold and rainy one summer night in 2007 when
adversity would strike hard and someone’s
life would literally be turned upside down.
Tim was heading home to drop off his friends after
grabbing a bite to eat. As he was coming off the
exit ramp of the highway, they inexplicably hit
the curb causing Tim’s Jeep to flip and roll.
The vehicle rolled out of control and Tim was ejected
through the moon roof. If that wasn’t bad
enough, the Jeep then proceeded to roll over him
causing multiple secondary injuries.
Tim was rushed to Elliot Hospital in Manchester,
New Hampshire before being transferred to Mass General
where he could be treated for the initial head trauma,
the internal bleeding, and fluid in his lungs. It
wasn’t until they were there that they understood
the full extent of Tim’s predicament in that
it became clear he had a spinal cord injury. However,
due to all of Tim’s other injuries and pneumonia,
immediate surgery was not an option. It wasn’t
until three weeks later that Tim underwent surgery.
Moreover, he developed a pressure sore because of
these other complications since he couldn’t
roll over in bed.
Once out of the hospital, Tim began his road to
recovery and underwent inpatient rehabilitation.
But unbeknownst to him, his sister was already planning
for his long-term recovery while Tim was still in
ICU. His sister found out about exercise based programs
on the web, and they knew right away that this was
where Tim needed to be if he was to ever advance
beyond basic therapy. They started doing fundraisers
so that once Tim was out of rehab and Journey Forward
opened its doors he would be able to start right
away.
In the short time that Tim has been participating
in our program, he has already demonstrated that
he has the drive and determination to succeed and
reach all of his goals. Holding a master’s
degree in physical education, Tim understands the
importance of our program and is an inspiration
to all of us here at Journey Forward. He says he
would even like to perhaps one day join our staff
as a specialist, bringing unique first-hand knowledge.
With the strong support of a loving family behind
him, we all look forward to seeing Tim reach his
goals.
