Michael's Story:
An aspiring film producer and former student at
the New York Film Academy, Michael was driving cross-country
a couple of years ago en route to fulfilling a lifelong
dream in L.A. While transiting Arizona with his
friend at the wheel, however, that dream would be
forced to take an abrupt detour. Going into a curve
at 75 mph, their little Volkswagen careened off
the desert highway and rolled over several times.
Michael was belted into his passenger seat, but
nonetheless had hit his head on the roof (as it
is believed by the authorities) and was left with
an injury to his cervical spine.
He was now suddenly bound to a wheelchair without
use of his arms or legs.
Mike spent less than four months in a hospital in
Arizona and then did varying amounts of time at
different outpatient facilities before coming to
Journey Forward. Mike, in his typical comedic fashion,
says he found out about Journey Forward by word
of mouth through the “weird world of wheelchairs.”
But he is also a skeptic and wasn’t easily
convinced that Journey Forward’s unique exercise
recovery program would work as well as it seems
to have in just the few short weeks that he’s
been a client here. Mike says that he has noticed
some small changes that are bigger than anything
he’s derived from any other rehab program.
His goal is to get stronger so that he can gain
the ability to push a manual wheelchair and be able
to sit up on his own. A big picture guy, he fully
realizes he’s going to need to travel down
a much different path than anticipated to reach
his ultimate destination of being able to walk down
the aisle to receive his Oscar nomination for best
picture.
