Goffstown NH Injury
Date: December 20, 1999 Diagnosis:
T12-L1 Incomplete
Kelly's Story:
It was Monday, December 20, 1999. It was a warm
rainy day in the city of Goffstown, New Hampshire.
Kelly, a 15 year-old at the time, woke up that morning
and went to school just like any other day. After
school was dismissed, Kelly was picked up by her
friend and they decided to go and visit another
friend who had stayed home sick from school that
day.
It was 3 p.m. when the small sports car they were
riding in skidded off the wet icy road and hit a
brick wall that was holding up an old bridge. Kelly
was now pinned against the dash and couldn’t
feel her legs. The rescue team was called in and
had to use the Jaws-Of-Life to pry open the car
in order to get Kelly out of the vehicle. She was
taken to Catholic Medical Center where she underwent
surgery and spent nine days in the hospital. Her
injury was diagnosed as a T12-L1. The doctors told
her family that Kelly would be a vegetable and would
have no movement of her legs.
Over the next two and a half months, rehab was tough
for Kelly. She was mentally down and physically
didn’t feel up to doing anything. But one
day in January, a month into her rehab, she was
able to move her knee. From then on she was determined
to walk at all costs. A few weeks later, she started
taking steps with the help of braces. Once her traditional
therapy stopped in 2003, she kept on and continued
to work hard on her road to recovery. She installed
parallel bars at her home, went to the gym where
she lifted weights, and worked her legs consistently
nonstop. Traditional therapy was somewhat tough
because of the age barrier. Most clients were elderly
and were there for hip replacements or knees injuries.
Kelly wanted to experience a facility that could
cater to her needs and work with someone that would
honor her goals.
Then Kelly found Journey Forward. She enters Journey
Forward with the goal of standing on her own and
taking steps independently. In the short time that
Kelly has been with Journey Forward she has seen
significant changes in her functional capacity,
and now has the courage and strength to be more
independent at home.
In short, Journey Forward has been exactly what
the doctor ordered.
