Carmel D. at Journey ForwardHometown: Galway, Ireland
Injury Date: May 27, 2007
Diagnosis: T11 - T12 Complete

Carmel's Story:
Carmel has journeyed far since a tragic automobile accident left her paralyzed from the waist down a little over one year ago.

After initially being treated by doctors in her home country, Carmel experienced what is common to many who lose mobility in that her rehabilitation was primarily aimed at increasing occupational function while in a wheelchair. Not content to simply live in a chair for the rest of her life, she began exploring other options.

Carmel ventured across the pond and the U.S. to the state of Utah where she trained at a facility that she enjoyed, although it focused more attention on her strengths (her upper body) than where she felt she wanted more work. Since she didn’t want her body to become accustomed to living in and moving through the use of a restrictive device, she knew that she would need to find a viable, proven alternative.

That’s when she happened to discover Journey Forward and its progressive philosophy of dynamic nervous stimulation of the entire body. At Journey Forward, the client is brought through a process of total-body exercise therapy using a variety of modalities to which she hadn’t been exposed.

It’s been a unique and productive experience for her thus far. In the two short months that she’s been at Journey Forward, she now feels sensation in her lower legs that she hadn’t felt previously through active range of motion and load-bearing exercise. Moreover, she has been able to see herself riding a bike with minimal assistance and taking real steps on a treadmill. All of this has given her a renewed sense of hope for the future.

Carmel has been aggressive in her approach to training, at 4-5 days per week. She is determined to continue making progress and to one day get back on her feet. It’s an attitude that will surely carry over to her home training when she returns after two months to a fully equipped gym utilizing many of the techniques she learned while at our facility.
