Ben's Story:
Ben has been training at Journey Forward for just
over one year now, and as a result has seen tremendous
results. Originally diagnosed as a “Complete
Injury”; Ben was reevaluated after only three
months in our program and improved his neurological
classification to an ASIA B Incomplete injury. In
the year since he was last diagnosed he has made
considerable gains in Motor and Sensory function
that would suggest another increase to his neurological
classification.
Having no function below his level of injury when
he first came to Journey Forward, Ben is now performing
exercise that were once thought to be impossible.
With an increase in function throughout his lower
extremities; Ben is now performing unassisted exercises,
including kneeling, leg extensions, squats on the
total gym, crawling, leg presses, adduction exercises
and a variety of other range of motion activities.
Ben began active gait-training after only 8 months
in our program by taking steps with the use of two
specialists and a walker. He has progressively needed
less and less assistance and is now walking using
a walker and only one specialist for spotting. In
addition to motor function Ben has also had some
slight changes in sensation to his calves and hamstrings.
He is able to feel temperature and deep touch, and
on occasion he also feels the sensations of light
touch.
Ben continues to work on functional and developmental
activities while also concentrating on balance and
coordination exercises for standing. Over the next
few months we will be working on strengthening his
hamstrings and calf’s with Dynamic Neural
Stimulation. Through his dedication and determination
Ben has been able to accomplish so much more than
anyone had originally thought. It has been a pleasure
to work with someone with such a great “can
do” attitude and we look forward to helping
Ben continue on his Journey Forward.
